The Citizen Lab · Network Security Issues in RedNote - The Citizen LabOur first network security analysis of the popular Chinese social media platform, RedNote, revealed numerous issues with the Android and iOS versions of the app. Most notably, we found that both the Android and iOS versions of RedNote fetch viewed images and videos without any encryption, which enables network eavesdroppers to learn exactly what content users are browsing. We also found a vulnerability in the Android version that enables network attackers to learn the contents of files on users’ devices. We disclosed the vulnerability issues to RedNote, and its vendors NEXTDATA, and MobTech, but did not receive a response from any party. This report underscores the importance of using well-supported encryption implementations, such as transport layer security (TLS). We recommend that users who are highly concerned about network surveillance from any party refrain from using RedNote until these security issues are resolved.
During the #TikTokBan some have characterized #RedNote as an opportunity for #Chinese and western netizens to finally talk to each other, I wonder if anything came out of that? Because from my experience I see that some #international #students (especially Chinese, but certainly applicable to others as well) - already in the West and have little language barrier - don't meaningfully interact outside of their ethnic groups (beyond necessity), and the cause of that should be explored.

He then reposts these same videos on American-owned YouTube. All videos get taken down for violating for promotion "violent criminal organizations"??????????

Another thing I found out from #xiaohongshu is that Chinese people really HATE term Lunar New Year, so please don't say that to them. It's actually "Spring Festival" (chun jie) or "Guo Nian" (passing of a year). In Malaysia we simply call it Chinese New Year. In Hokkien, we call it "xin jia".
I don't know if we're sensitive about the Lunar bit in Malaysia though.
