The #Guix leaders are indeed the reason I don't even give it a try despite some great people like you working on it.

I will reconsider when I'll read a public apology for this personal attack to a neurodivergent #hacker such as #RMS.

It worth to remember how that "joint stab in the back" was published while RMS was under attack because he dared defend Minsky's memory from the same sort of mob justice that was then redirected (and amplified on #BigTech social media) against RMS himself.

Some of those "leaders" who signed that "joint statement" a couple years later signed an even worse attack built on top of lies.

These sort of personal attacks have clear political goals, "incidentally" aligned with BigTech interests.

Now @zimoun@sciences.re could try to sort me among #Stallman fanboys to reinforce his beliefs, but in fact I'm pretty critical of RMS work: ultimately I think he based free software on a cold-war biased ideology, without a proper balance between communion (aka sharing strongly protected commons) and freedom. This huge error left space to #opensource and to the current use of #FreeSoftware by all sort of large corporations to abuse and subdue people.
Another (related) issue has been the total lack of a cohesive architectural design for #GNU system: RMS was too (inconsciously) fond of free market ideology to lead the movement's technically, and this lack of cohordination was turned by #ESR to the "bazaar" (not so subtle) sublimation of free market, to ease corporate exploitation of the high skilled labour of #hackers.

But in fact, with all of his political errors, he's still the most coherent and commited free software activist out there.

So I will consider Guix again when they will publish a joint apology with the same visibility the back-stab had in 2019.

Not sure why NYTimes even bothers to write this 15 page Terms and Conditions when this single sentence says "all bets are off: we have no idea where your data goes, but it's all up for grabs".

It's like the person house sitting for you says "I will not let anyone look at the passwords on your computer except for, I don't know, some people who come over to party with me while I'm watching your house."

Kind of a deal breaker.

Sorry, if my non-mastering of Dutch is confusing me 🙂

If I understand correctly, you see a migration from WA to Signal as a move away from #BigTech and to more freedom. I disagree strongly.

Signal is probably more secure than WA and their team is much more trustworthy.

But it's involuted in big tech. It runs on the US Amazon cloud of Jeff B., it only works (fully) with Google Android and Apple iOS, and it even forces use of phone numbers as ids. That's not freedom in my book.

I've reached this point where I know Big Tech is useless unless I can free it from corporate greed with Linux and GrapheneOS.

Big Tech is like digital colonialism, siphoning creativity and exploiting consumers for profit while deepening inequality. These corporations treat individuals as mere resources in their relentless pursuit of profit.

Platforms like TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and all those other platforms are just tools for Big Tech to exploit us. They're trash.

When will you stand up against their exploitation? Look at the harm they cause!

Norwegians are notoriously bad at caring about information security. I'm sure the fact that we in general have a high confidence in our government has much to do with it. As a people we tend to be incredibly naïve when it comes to Big Tech.

But I'm glad to see that Signal has risen in the top downloads in the Play Store since Signalgate broke. It was at 72nd place then, and just now it sits at 19th.

I would love it if more people dropped Messenger!

"On March 18, politicians in the Netherlands House of Representatives passed eight motions asking the government to reduce reliance on US tech companies and move to European alternatives. Days before, more than 100 organizations signed an open letter to European officials calling for the continent to become “more technologically independent” and saying the status quo creates “security and reliability risks.”

Two European-based cloud service companies, Exoscale and Elastx, tell WIRED they have seen an uptick in potential customers looking to abandon US cloud providers over the last two weeks—with some already starting to make the jump. Multiple technology advisers say they are having widespread discussions about what it would take to uproot services, data, and systems.

“We have more demand from across Europe,” says Mathias Nöbauer, the CEO of Swiss-based hosting provider Exoscale, adding there has been an increase in new customers seeking to move away from cloud giants. “Some customers were very explicit,” Nöbauer says. “Especially customers from Denmark being very explicit that they want to move away from US hyperscalers because of the US administration and what they said about Greenland.”"
