"New bill proposes repealing vote-by-mail in Oregon, public invited to testify"

koin.com/news/politics/new-bil

It looks like this bill would make in-person voting default and folks would need to request mail ballots. Our current system sends out all ballots by mail automatically.

There's a 48 hour window to submit a public comment:

olis.oregonlegislature.gov/liz

I don't know how much support this bill has but I wrote comment opposing it just in case.

Voter suppression update:

Now looks like 400,000 people may have been turned away from voting due to ID issues....

If Labour will not rid us of this law, then an amendment expanding considerably the range of acceptable documents/items that are valid is required.

Its anti-democratic & was driven by false 'concerns' about electoral fraud of which there is a vanishingly small incidence in the UK.

"Among people turned away at least once, about a third had ID that was not on the relatively narrow list of permitted documents; about a quarter said the name on their ID was different to that on the electoral register; and 12% said they were told the picture on the ID did not match their appearance."

#VoterID requirements believed to have prevented upto 400,000 people voting…

Remind me, why was this required?

‘From 2010 to 2016, spanning two general elections and the EU referendum, there were 146 allegations of what is officially known as voter personation. Seven people were convicted, five of them in a single case in Derby.’

@rbreich
It bears noting that #Texas did ALL 3.
(restricted Vote by Mail, has #VoterID, and regularly purges the voter roll... I believe after every 5-6 years.)

The state limited #Absentee #Ballot drop boxes to *one per county*... including Harris County's 4.5 million people (home to #Houston's 2M people)... to a single drop box at Reliant Stadium on the SW side of town.

@TonyStark @kilroy_was_here @noondlyt I disagree, because the #EU elections just did that at 500M + inhabitants and it worked fine too.

#Protip: Paying people to actually do the counting is cheaper than those fancy voting machines, is more reliable, easier to scale and harder to compromize, evev if you only pay them a flat €50 (tax-free!)...

It's not a matter of possibility, but political will, and with most of the population not even voting because they feel like they don't matter at all alongside a classist voting system and #VoterID BS, elections in the #USA are having frightingly low turnover.

  • Also I'm pretty shure the density of polling stations in the USA is way lower both by area and espechally per eligible voter so no, I don't let the soze argument slide either. Also nothing says counting needs to be finished within seconds or minutes and we all should accept a bit more waiting time in exchsnge for higher security instead.

Frankly I'd not give a shit about the #US were it not for the fact that <250M people eligible to vote there de-facto impact the safety and security of >1B people outside of the USA that werre never ever aboe to vote themselves...

  • Which is why I URGE EVERYONE to #Vote ffs!

Several of the lawsuits seek to prevent states from counting #MailInBallots that are missing a date or that are received after Election Day.

Others are challenging whether states have maintained accurate #VoterRegistration lists, prevented #noncitizens from voting & tightened #VoterID rules.

#Republicans have won a couple of the lawsuits, including one in #NewYork that struck down a #law that allowed noncitizens to #vote in local #elections.

Now an election has been called for #4July don't forget to:

If you're in #Scotland then we are in the middle of the #summerholiday period. So, why not arrange for a #PostalVote?

Postal Vote Application -

If you're going to #VoteInPerson then you'll need #voterid (you don't need one of you're doing a Postal Vote):

Voter authority certificate - gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-vote

GOV.UKRegister to voteRegister to vote to take part in elections in the UK. Includes how to get on the electoral register and how to update your address on the register.

This exercise in shrinking the electorate to Conservative advantage must not be the new normal. Labour, in office, should scrap it
