mapleI don't know if someone needs to hear this but I have two life observations:Marriage: If you are contemplating marrying someone and then think you will change them in some way, please cancel your marriage plans right now. If you think they are perfect except that they do one thing that annoys the hell out of you, please don't think that you will get them to stop doing that one thing after you are married. No amount of pleading, cajoling, threatening, or other attempts to make them change will work. If it really annoys you that they leave their dirty socks on the floor, after you marry they may leave their dirty clothes there as well. And if you ever think that somehow, some way you have won that battle, rest assured they will hold it against you until the day you divorce. You can only change yourself, not someone else, so if you just can't live with their flaws, please save yourself from what will surely become a disastrous marriage.Complements: If you think someone is not paying you enough complements or thanking you as much as they should, please consider that unfortunately some people were raised in families were complements were weaponized. For example, a child says "I love you" to his parent and the response is "You don't love me. If you loved me you'd clean your room (or do the dishes, or mow the lawn, or some other chore)." Or a child says "That was a great meal" and the parent say, "You mean I finally found something you like? Normally all you do is complain about the food. You're such an ungrateful child!" In such families, no complement or even a "thank you" goes unpunished. And a child in such a family quickly learns to keep their mouth shut and be very stingy about complements or expressions of affection.
